SEVEN WEEKS UNTIL  SUBMISSION

-----------------PROGRESSION-----------------

Definition of our aims:

Naturally solving the six problems of the competition:

- Floating control
- Natural landscape
- Increasing the minimum water level
- Regaining the ecological functions
- Improving the water quality
- Social benefit and recreation qualities of the.        river landscape as public space

First concept drafts:

1) The Guiding Technique
Previous research (see Research/Beaver and Research/Artists) has shown that a communication between beavers and humans is possible:
-  sound: Beavers can be guided to build dams by audio records of a water stream.
smell: Beavers do not inhabit marked territories, selected areas can be marked and thereby protected
physical barriers: selected trees can be protected and other, fast growing trees can be
“sacrificed” for dam material

2) The Day and Night Technique
A collaboration between beavers (working at night), constructing how they would naturally do and humans (taking over at daytime), adjusting, changing, proceeding in their interest.
result: a river landscape that is both natural, improved by multiple benefits that beavers contribute and functional in terms of urban needs.

3) The “Becoming-a-Beaver” Technique
Developing a toolkit, similar to the second week’s sensorial exploration, but further developed. Getting as close as possible to the experience of a beaver.

4) The “Free-Range-for-Nature” Technique
Imagining tearing down the concrete frames of the river and simulating how nature, including beavers, would take over if they had no guidance and no restrictions.

------------------NEXT STEPS------------------

  • How can we modify or combine our techniques?

  • What traces did the beavers leave at the Isar?

  • What gadgets do we need to equip us or/and  the beavers for a design-dialogue?
